How are websites created?

There are several steps in creating a website. I’ll outline them below and explain what we offer.

Planning, Consultation, and Contract

During the first step of the process, we sit down together over a cup of coffee to talk about your site. There are a lot of things to consider, like the questions below. We’ll talk through your vision of your website and we’ll discuss your budget and timeline. (Our consultations are always free!)

  • Who are your visitors?
  • How do you want the website to “feel” and “look?”
  • What action (if any) do you want your website visitors to take?
  • Do you want to be able to update and change the website yourself once it’s built?

These are just a few of the considerations you’ll need to consider before you begin. I sit down with each of my prospective clients to consider the exact vision and scope of your new website.

Once you’ve decided to let Northern Vista Designs create your site, we’ll sign a contract and start discussing the nitty-gritty details of your site’s look, feel, and functionality.

Buy your domain name

What is a domain name? It’s the web address your visitors will type in to find your site, for instance, www.yourbusinessname.com.

We have our clients buy their own domain name through a company like godaddy, google, or any number of other providers. This allows you to maintain permanent ownership of your domain name. Even if you choose to go with a different web developer in the future, your domain name will always be yours.

I start building your site

Some “web developers” simply buy a template, customize it a little, and charge you an exorbitant amount of money. I build each website from scratch, working closely with you to realize your vision. You will need to give me logos, pictures, and text that you want to include on the site. The process of coding a site can take a couple of weeks or a couple of months, depending on the size and complexity of the site. During this time, you and I will be in close communication as we make decisions together about the look and feel of the site.

(If you’re curious what the code behind a website looks like, hit CTRL + U on a webpage and you can see some of the code that creates the site. That’s the stuff I create.)

We work together on revisions

After the rough draft of the site is complete, I’ll show you a functioning draft of the website. Perhaps you’ve decided to use a different picture, or you want to change some design elements. No problem! That’s what this step is all about! I usually give my clients two revision cycles as part of their contract.

Your site goes live!

This is the most exciting part! After you’re fully satisfied with your new website, I’ll upload it to the cloud, and it will be live for the world to see!

Maintenance and Monitoring

After your site is live, I continue to monitor it via Google Analytics, and I give you some ideas on increasing your site’s visibility. If you ever need me to make changes, contact me! Hourly rates will apply.
